Academic curriculum
Kindergarten-2nd Grade
Kindergarten through 2nd grade is a time of rapid growth. Children strengthen basic skills and progress to higher-level thinking in literacy, math, science, and social studies. As they become more aware of the world around them, they build empathy, compassion, and understanding for others. They read to learn and understand the world and write to express ideas and opinions. Preparing for algebra and beyond, they learn to apply more complex math skills.
3rd Grade-5th Grade
In grades 3-5, students will participate in an elongated literacy block consisting of 80 minutes of
standards-based instruction as well as an additional 40 minutes of remediation to accelerate learning,
totaling 120 minutes of literacy instruction daily. In addition, our teachers will implement literacy
instruction across the curriculum through the use of common instructional strategies, which include homogenous student reading groups and leveled texts in core subject areas. For example, Science and Social Studies instruction will supplement literacy instruction by using common close reading
strategies and common analytical strategies designed to support students in synthesizing information
from informational texts aligned to their reading levels.
Teachers build on basic skills students learned in earlier grades to help students apply higher-level thinking to all subjects. Improved reading comprehension opens doors to a deeper understanding of ideas, topics, and events. Socially, children begin to internalize values like respect and cooperation and learn more personal responsibility. Most importantly, students build the skills they need to succeed in middle school.
